Amid blistering hot conditions, an enthusiastic field of budget enduro competitors completed 14hours of on-track running over two days at Queensland Raceway at the weekend(November 28/29) for the inaugural MotorsportSales OzEnduro Cup event.
The newly established MotorsportSales OzECup concept has been designed by Ontic Sports for budget-minded competitors who are interested in competing in endurance events at leading circuits around the country. The events are focused on fun, low-cost vehicles with a redbook trade-in value of $2,000 or less; and comradery on and off the track. Trophies are awarded for most laps and fastest lap both overall and for cars that are valued at $1000 or less (1k cup).
Taking the honours today were:
It was a tight race to the finish, with the#710 Synforce Lubricants 2000 Audi B5 1.8T Quattro of Russell Greaves, Darren Goddard, Ian Smee and Shane Logan laying down 477 laps to narrowly edge out the#17 Double Decker Racing BMW 325 of Peter Jolly, Brian McDonald, Gerard Forde, Alistair Dowdle and Mark Vilgan by just one lap in the race for the event’s biggest honour: Most Laps (overall). Fastest Lap overall went to the #299 Cool Runnings Nissan NX Coupe entry.
The #710 entry and the #17 were separated by just tenths of a second in the final hours, incredibly traversing the circuit nose to tail after more than 13hours of running before with just 45 minutes to go, the #17 pitted. Earlier in the day, the #4 BeAUtiful Racing Ford Falcon AU was also in the mix, eventually crossing the finish line with 468 laps to its name.
“It was a really, really close race for Most Laps between three cars, and in those last couple of hours, between two cars. We were only separated by a very small amount of time, it was very close, and but for a strategy error they probably would have beaten us,” Greaves said.
“We are very, very happy with the result and it was a well-run event – there were no dramas, everything went smoothly, and it was a lot of fun. We worked very hard today and I can tell you the BMW nearly had us beat, we had to work really hard to get here.
“I would like to send my thanks to Ontic Sports and Troy (Williams, Ontic Sports GM) – they did a really good job of the weekend, there were no dramas, no problems, everything ran smoothly and nothing was too much trouble.
“I would also like to thank my ex-wife, as if she hadn’t left me, I wouldn’t be here!” he laughed.
Meanwhile, the #405 Rivers Insurance Brokers Peugeot 405 MI16 of Paul Trappett, Stephen Kennedy, Lewin Patridge, Scott Denning and Josh Trappett took out both the Most Laps and Fastest Lap Awards for the 1kCup.
“It was the best event, one that we definitely loved and want to keep doing –it was a very well-run weekend and just very relaxed,” Josh Trappett said.
“We had a few mechanical issues early which took us out of the running for the overall standings where it was very competitive especially for the top two at the end, it was a very competitive day.
“We are definitely looking forward to the next one. It was run very well by the Ontic Sports and QR staff and we would definitely love to do another one in the future.
“We would like to thank our mechanic, LJ, as we couldn’t do this without him! And also, Ontic Sports and QR as well as our sponsor, Rivers Insurance Brokers.”
Also recognised was the #221 HARD Racing Hyundai Excel team of Jed Mylrea, Stephen Ware, Phil Lattimore and Cameron Lattimore, who persevered to cross the finish line at the end of 14 hours of on-track running despite having to undertake an engine and clutch replacement on Saturday evening.
The next MotorsportSales OzEnduro Cup event will be held at Winton Motor Raceway in February 2021.
