Australian production car racing stalwart Gerry Burges and his son Leigh Burges are set to contest the #33 Aqualuma LED/York Developments Mitsubishi Evo9 at this weekend’s debut of the MotorsportSales Enduro Champs at Sydney Motorsport Park (March 6/7).
The pair will each drive two of the weekend’s four one-hour races in the car they have campaigned in production car events around the country for many years.
After a slow 2020 racing-wise, the Burges’ are keen for a return to endurance racing thanks to the new MotorsportSales Enduro Champs.
“We are certainly looking forward to plenty of time on the track. After a very quiet 2020, to just get out there and get an hour on the track at a time will be just great,” Gerry said.
“Aside from the endurance formats that we love, the other interesting thing about this new series that we are looking forward to is the tyre selection options.
“The series also offers some great venues with Winton Motor Raceway, Queensland Raceway, Wakefield Park, The Bend Motorsport Park and Sydney Motorsport Park which provides a great array of tracks – our aim is to follow this series all year and put some good time into this series and its endurance racing formats.
“As the series progresses across the year, I fully expect to see the entry lists growing and growing as people realise this is a great new series where you can do a lot of endurance racing at a great mix of tracks; and with a choice of tyre and a nice wide eligibility, I think it will suit a lot of people.
“The compulsory pit stops where you have to take two wheels off and put them back on will also add something.
“It is going to be great to get out there this weekend and go, go, go!”
The Burges’ entry has a long history behind it.
“It was actually the original car of Garry Holt many years ago. I bought it off Gary, and it is just a really good group 3E production car. We will be running it in 3E specs this weekend – at this event, the boost is actually free, but we have decided to leave it at the Group 3E specs and will run all of our events like that,” Gerry explained.
The 2021 MotorsportSales Enduro Champs will commence on March 6-7 at Sydney Motorsport Park, before travelling to Winton Motor Raceway (June 11-13), Queensland Raceway (August 6-8), Wakefield Park Raceway (October 22-24) and Tailem Bend (December 3-5).
